"Bringing Hope Through Cello Harmony"

Early Education and Mentorship:

Born in Seoul, South Korea, Andrew Kim is a renowned cellist and the Founder and Music Director of the Monthly Chamber Music Concert Series at the Andy Kim Music Studio in Northvale, New Jersey, since 2011.

 

In 1976, he was invited to study with Heidi Litchauer at the prestigious Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria.

 

During a visit to the United States, he attended the Meadowmount School of Music in 1978, where he studied under Channing Robbins. At the end of that summer, he received a life-changing opportunity when world-famous cellist Aldo Parisot, a professor at Yale University School of Music, took him under his wing. Parisot provided room and board at his Connecticut home and became a mentor who nurtured and shaped Kim’s musical journey.

Education and Professional Growth:

Andrew Kim continued his musical development by participating in master classes led by renowned cellist Janos Starker at Yale University.

 

After completing his education at Yale School of Music, he joined the Essex Quartet, a chamber ensemble.

 

The Essex Quartet, under the auspices of Columbia Artists Management’s Douglas Sheldon division, embarked on extensive tours throughout North America from 1988 to 1996. They received critical acclaim for their performances in major cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Philadelphia.

 

As part of their Community Concert Series, Mr. Kim and the Essex Quartet traveled to all 50 U.S. states, performing in diverse venues, including high school auditoriums, university concert halls, churches, and town halls.

Collaborations and Teaching:

Kim’s career has been enriched by collaborations with esteemed artists, including Emanuel Ax, Stanley Drucker, Lily Friedman, and many of the world’s great string quartets.

 

He served as a teaching assistant to Joel Krosnick of the Juilliard string quartet at the Juilliard School.

Kim also shared his expertise as a chamber music faculty member at various festivals, including the Arcady Music Festival, Palisades Arts Summer Festival, Bay View Music Festival, and Summertrios.

Missionary Work and Humanitarian Contributions:

Since 2005, Andrew Kim has been a dedicated missionary cellist, regularly traveling to locations such as the Peruvian side of the Amazon villages, Cuzco, Huaraz, Lima, and Nahuinlla. During these missions, he played his cello for native children and adults while healthcare professionals provided medical treatments.

 

His mission work expanded to include international destinations such as Beijing, Kashgar, Lanzhou, Urumqi, Xian in China, and Almaty in Kazakhstan, starting in 2013.

 

In Almaty, Kazakhstan, Kim performed at an orphanage for physically handicapped children under government supervision and spent time with gravely ill children at an oncology hospital.

 

In 2016, he participated in fundraising concerts in Ottawa and Montreal, raising funds for Syrian refugees migrating to Canada. These events were sponsored by the Korean Embassy in Ottawa, Canada, and the non-profit organization “Peace 4 People” from Seoul, South Korea.

 

From 2017 to 2019, Mr. Kim has been a part of “ARISE” evangelistic campaign in London, United Kingdom where he would play his cello on the streets of nearby towns of London.  He would also play mini-concerts and share his personal testimonies for the gatherings of believers and non-believers during the special worship services.  After the pandemic years from 2020 to 2023, Mr. Kim has returned to the United Kingdom to continue his ministry with “ARISE”.

 

In March of 2023, he has traveled to Lublin, Poland with five other musicians to provide some relief to the Ukrainian refugees with his music and collaborated concert with Ukrainian musicians as well.
